“You’re late,” Jessica said the next morning when I resumed work.

“Just 5 minutes, Jessy,” I said casually as I walked past her toward the call room.

“I needed to be out of here by 8 am.”

"Okay...I’m sorry. I got held up. My Uber driver was delayed,” I said deliberately. I didn't trust her.

“Fine. Let's do ward rounds. Dr. Raymond said ten minutes,” she blurted out, not smiling.

“Okay.”

Dr. Raymond? What happened to Greg? He was always the one who gave time for ward rounds. After my conversation with Barb, I decided to shake off whatever it was I thought I felt the night before.

Ten minutes later, I was in the doctor’s lounge and everyone was present apart from Greg. We did the ward rounds, but I couldn't help but wonder why he wasn't around. Maybe he got held up. Focusing on work, we finished the rounds and admitted three patients that morning. I felt a patient in the ICU needed extra evaluation and I decided to inform Greg. It was 1 p.m. already. He should be in the hospital. I would have asked Dr. Raymond, but for patients in the ICU, you only take instructions from consultants.

I walked to Greg’s office and noticed Dr. Raymond was sitting on Jane’s desk. She was looking at him lovingly; I recognized the look.

Was something going on between this duo?

Jane was the first to see me, and she adjusted immediately. Dr. Raymond followed her gaze, but he didn't move when he saw me. He only smiled. I smiled back.

“Is he in?” I asked, gesturing to Greg’s closed door. “I want to discuss a patient’s case with him.”

“No. Greg isn't coming to work today.”

“Oh.”

“Today is October 26th, everyone knows he doesn't come to work." Jane said.

“And May 25th, Bella’s birthday,” Dr Raymond added.

"Oh…”

They saw the confusion on my face.

“Okay. I know you’re new around here. That's why you don't know much. But most of the hospital staff are aware. His wife passed away in this hospital on October 26th.”

What?

“Oh my God…Wow,” I said in shock.

"Yeah, so everyone knows he wouldn’t come to work today, and on May 25th, every year. I wouldn’t have said anything, but almost everyone knows since it happened here.”

I was speechless. His wife was dead. Cameron doesn't have a mom currently. That sweet boy.

“That was when the switch happened. Told you he was an amazing soul,” Jane added smiling.

“I didn't realize. Now I understand...Oh my God. I didn't know.”

“That's because you’re new. You would have heard eventually.”

I nodded. “That’s sad. Okay. Dr. Raymond can you come see the patient then?”

"Do I have a choice?” he said, rolling his eyes.

We all laughed. But my laughter wasn’t deep. It was shallow. Different thoughts consumed my mind.

As Dr. Raymond got down from the desk and walked ahead of me. I turned back to Jane and gave her a questioning look. She looked away immediately, feigning ignorance.

“I’ll be back,” I mouthed to her, and she smiled.

We got to the ICU and I tried to distract myself from what I’d heard.
